Disability Sports

At Sydney Olympic Park we ensure both able bodied and athletes with a disability have the opportunity to participate in physical recreation, sport and cultural activities at a level of their choice. The Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games was the second largest sporting event ever held in Australia after the 2000 Olympic Games. The opening ceremony at Stadium Australia, on 18 October 2000, marked the start of eleven days of competition. The Paralympic Games at Sydney Olympic Park was a great success with more than double the ticketing sales than that of the Atlanta Paralympics. They were the first Paralympics ever held in the Southern Hemisphere.

Sydney Olympic Park’s Values

  • Physical recreation, sport and cultural activity provide a wealth of social and physical benefits.
  • People with a disability have the right to participate in physical recreation, sport and cultural activity of their choice and to decide where, when and with whom to take part.
  • People with a disability have the right to be involved in physical recreation, sport and cultural activity at a level of their choosing, eg with other people with a disability or with mainstream.
  • People with a disability and mainstream should have equal opportunities to access quality physical recreation, sport and cultural activity services and facilities.
  • Physical recreation, sport and cultural activity services and facilities should be fully accessible for all people with a disability.
  • Physical recreation, sport and cultural activity providers should listen to and recognise the views, perceptions and comments of people with a disability and ensure they are taken into account.
