Newington Armory

Secret site revealed

Newington Armory Open DayNewington Armory is a special place - formerly the Royal Australian Naval Armament Depot (RANAD), it features over 100 heritage buildings of various ages and types, set amidst a 52 hectare riverside landscape of undulating hills and woodlands.

The heritage buildings provide the Armory with a unique character, which is described through an award-winning heritage interpretation program, that can be viewed at the original 1897 gate house.

Location and Access

Glass wall interpretive at Newington ArmorySituated between the southern bank of the Parramatta River and the suburb of Newington - the former Olympic Village, the site is a restricted area with limited public access. You can though 'Explore the Armory' by foot or bike every Sunday between 10am and 4pm.

If driving, Newington Armory can be accessed via Jamieson Street (off Holker Street), with free parking available at Blaxland Riverside Park. If on foot or bike, it can be accessed from the Sydney Olympic Park Ferry Wharf or Silverwater is via a pleasant and easy walk/ride along The River Walk. From Hill road take the Louise Savage pathway.

History

Newington Armory reflects over 100 years of naval occupation and use, and in an even earlier life as part of the 1807 colonial land grant to the pioneering Blaxland Family. The original character of the landscape can be seen in the beautiful remnant turpentine ironbark forest and wetlands bordering the site.

Artists at the Armory

Newington Armory now has a new artist's facility comprising of an open plan studio that can accommodate up to 21 artists at a time, working in the disciplines of painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking. A writer's studio is also available.

Artists can apply to make use of the facilities in the form of, a long-term licence for a studio space, a residency, or casual hire.

Shared residential accommodation within a fully restored heritage cottage is also available on site for artists-in-residence.

Venue Hire

People in the mess hallNewington Armory offers a range of unique venues ideally suited for community-based and multi-venue arts and cultural events. Distinctive and secure, the site is located just 14 kilometres from Sydney’s CBD, at the gateway to Western Sydney, and offers open grasslands and multiple venues within walking distance of each other.
