The Olympic Symbol of five rings represents the union of five continents and the meeting places of athletes from all over the world at the Olympic games. After the Olympics, following agreement with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and the International Olympic Committee, the Olympic Rings were laid in granite in Fig Grove.

The presence of Olympic Rings at the centre of Sydney Olympic Park, just opposite the Telstra Stadium highlights the Olympic legacy of the Sydney Olympic Park Precinct and its venues. It underlines and points towards the various other artworks in the surrounding built environment that have an element of Olympic history embedded in them.

This is the first time the Olympic insignia has been officially incorporated in an Olympic venue.
