The sculpture is a centaur, half man and half-horse. It consists of intricately woven mild steel bars, forming a three-dimensional line drawing in space. Standing approximately 3.4 metres high, 2.9 metres long, and 1.8 meters wide. “Chiron”, the centaur, encapsulates the spirit of the Sydney Showground and Sydney Olympic Park through its unity of man and animal, directly associated with the Royal Easter Show, and as a creature of Ancient Greek Mythology, historically resonating with the site of the Olympics. "Chiron" was also the centaur responsible for the teaching of arts and medicine to the ancient Greek heroes, Apollo, Achilles, Jason and Hercules.

The figure is posed with arms out, in a pose welcoming visitors to the site and is given animation by subtle twists of the spine and a tilt of the head. First exhibited at Sydney’s annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition, the sculpture was installed at its current location to coincide with the 2004 Royal Easter Show.
