Unofficially referred to as Sydney Olympic Park's town square, Jacaranda Square has been enhanced to provide an 'everyday' park for the community, as well as an easy thoroughfare for commuters to access the railway station from the eastern end.
The result of a design competition won by a group of ASPECT Studios in collaboration with McGregor Westlake Architects and Deuce Design, Jacaranda Square provides a space for the employees of Sydney Olympic Park to enjoy an office break or lunch-time relaxation. Its central location between Australia Avenue and the railway station means the square is in close proximity to businesses in Parkview Drive and the new Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Watpac buildings.
The Square has been designed for passive recreation and community gathering, particularly aimed at the neighbouring employee and soon-to arrive residential population.
The new square includes seating, shade structures and a Pablo & Rusty's Cafe set among a landscape of native trees. A recycled brick pavement is featured, which links the square to the heritage of the nearby Brickpit - the site of the former NSW State Brickworks. Environmental and social sustainability is supported by the use of recycled materials and recycled water in irrigation.
The concrete seating on the edge of the square, with walls of glazed pixellated bricks and under the canopy of polychrome greens makes it an attractive and ideal place to take a break in the heart of Sydney Olympic Park.
