Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre

The Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre opened in 1994, as an international first-class, multi-function Athletic Centre. It boasts a two-arena complex and operates as an international standard track and field facility for competition events and training.
The track in both venues is an IAAF approved Mondo Sportflex Super X to facilitate sprint, throws, jumps, hurdles and steeplechase. The main grandstand in the competition arena seats 5,000 people and the surrounding grass banks can cater for 10,000 people with an option for temporary stand use. Find out more about the features of the Athletic Centre.
Features
- The 5,000 seat grandstand is named in honour of 'Golden Girl' Betty Cuthbert, Australia's four time Olympic Champion
- It is the first in Australia to use stayed-cable bridge design technology for its roof
- The 100 tonne roof is suspended by high tensile cables from two 40 metre masts
- Electronic scoreboard, 7m x 6m
- Grassed banks for up to 10,000 people
- All 40,000 cubic metres of earth excavated during construction has been re-used for grassed or landscaped embankments on site, with surrounding major trees saved
- The Track meets Olympic and International Amateur Athletic Federation criteria, standardising the track surface with Telstra Stadium for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. This same track has been moved here to the Athletic Centre.
- Installing the track involved cutting five-thousand linear metres of sheet rubber by hand using a stanley knife, smearing 20 tons of adhesive, and wearing out fifty pairs of gloves!
- In total, ten-thousand square metres of Sportflex Super X rubber sheets were laid
- The track comprises three colours: red for competition running areas, gold for high-jump and green for outfield
- The surface is pre-fabricated, vulcanised and embossed material, laid like carpet rather than mixed and poured on-site
- The honeycomb structure of the tracks' cushion-backing has one air pocket per centimetre, providing millions of individual shock absorbers
