Blaxland Riverside Park has a unique history. The site was originally part of the Newington Estate that was granted to John Blaxland in 1807. Newington House, the residence of the Blaxland family, remains in the grounds of the adjoining Silverwater Correctional Centre and is listed on the State Heritage Register.
The adjoining Newington Armory (formerly the Royal Australian Navy Armaments Depot) is listed on the heritage register of the National Estate due to its significant and rare extensive military and industrial landscape as well the unique features of its buildings.
