superb_fairy_wren_small.jpgLocated at the forest's edge of the Newington Nature Reserve, the newly-opened Discovery Centre sits within four heritage buildings at Newington Armory providing administration offices, an extensive bird book library, education room and interpretation facilities for Birds Australia projects.

The adjoining Reserve is a haven of significant environmental value including bird habitats, and the facility is the centrepiece of Birds Australia's engagement with the community, providing education about biodiversity and the value of birds and their habitats.

 

Activities at the Discovery Centre

  • Bird education events (workshops, bird walks, seminars, visits by school groups)
  • Provision of expertise on birds to Park visitors
  • Research and conservation projects, including:
    • Bird watchingBirds In Backyards, a joint project with the Australian Museum
    • Cowra Woodland Birds Program, now in its seventh year
    • Regent Honeyeater Recovery Project
    • North Head Bird Survey
    • Engaging Ethnic Communities in Urban Bird Conservation
    • Port Botany Extension Project
    • Bird Surveys of the Botany Wetlands, funded by Sydney Water
