Place Making

A best practice model for sustainability.

Sydney Olympic Park is a special place that is nationally and internationally recognised as a model for best practice design, development and environmental management, guided by the principles of sustainable development.

The Authority has adopted a holistic approach towards sustainability, where it strives to obtain a balance in the areas of:

  • social equity (through capacity building), inclusion and accessibility
  • best practice design, development and environmental management

What is place making?

Place making involves all the functions that are necessary in achieving a sustainable urban outcome - that is balancing the social, cultural, environmental, financial and economic dimensions within a project.

Place making is also a multi faceted process that aims to implement the Authority's vision for the place, that is Sydney Olympic Park, through our key organisational functions:

  • Urban planning and design
  • Engineering and development
  • Asset management
  • Marketing and public relations
  • Financial management
  • Capacity building

Building a township

At Sydney Olympic Park, the Authority, plans to build a town that captures the uniqueness of the natural environment and reflects the authenticity of urban design.

Our aim is to convert the existing area into a modern township complete with:
  • a town centre consisting of a central business district
  • a residential area providing quality homes and services
  • parkland areas available for community recreation
  • educational facilities that promote a learning culture
  • a healthy environment ensured by provisions for environmental and social services
  • high quality, recreational, sporting and leisure facilities
  • tourism and ecotourism facilities for inbound and domestic travellers
  • exhibition facilities and venues to accommodate for special events and functions.
