The Sydney Olympic Park Authority was established on 1 July 2001.
The Authority is constituted by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority Act No 57 (available by searching in the NSW Legislation site under S for the Act) which established the Sydney Olympic Park Authority as a statutory authority, with responsibility to manage the public assets of Sydney Olympic Park - open space, venues, parklands and development areas. The legislation focuses on ensuring the best use and management of a large and unique area right in the geographical centre of Sydney, an area which is a world renowned destination.
All NSW Government legislation is available by visiting the NSW Legislation website.
The Authority aims to build on the magnificent Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic Coordination Authority (OCA) played an integral role in the planning and delivery of the Games. An archive of games information is avaiable on the Games Info website.
Background
The Homebush Bay Development Corporation, which pre-dated Sydney's bid for the 2000 Olympic Games, was established to oversee the urban renewal of Homebush Bay. The renewal commenced in 1991 and was scheduled for completion in the year 2000.
The success of the bid increased significantly the pace and scope of development within Homebush Bay. The masterplan for example, was revised to incorporate the development of Sydney Olympic Park. The result overall was that Homebush Bay became one of Australia's largest urban renewal projects.
From 1995, the Olympic Coordination Authority (OCA) became responsible for the planning, urban development and management of Homebush Bay and other facilities for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
