Fact Sheet - Sporting venues and community benefits

General

  • 38 different sports played which attract 1.5 million participants each year
  • Home to NRL Bulldogs; AFL Sydney Swans; Netball Sydney TAB Swifts, Basketball West Sydney Razorbacks
  • Home to Basketball Australia; Australian Paralympic Committee; Hockey NSW; Tennis NSW; NSW Institute of Sport; Department of Sport & Recreation, AFL (NSW/ACT) Commission Development Headquarters

Sydney International Tennis Centre

  • Attracts 300 people per week with two to five year old children attending "buzzy-bee" programs
  • Runs a "healthy active kids program" for 6-12 year olds
  • Will host 24 tennis tournaments in 2004/05 from the "Sydney International" to junior tournaments
  • Attracts around 2,000 people per week for general use of courts

Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre

  • Attracts over 1 million visitors a year
  • Hosts over 200 school swimming/athletics carnivals a year
  • Hosts 14,000 school students a year attending swimming classes

Sydney Olympic Park Golf Driving Range

  • Attracts approximately 3,000 golfers a week
  • Runs tuition programs for local schools as part of their physical education curriculum
  • Sponsors a junior golf foundation for children between 7-17 years
  • Offers a family orientated outing involving mini-golf and supervised children's parties

Sports Halls

  • Offers high quality facilities for 'developing sports' such as handball, judo, martial arts, volleyball, table tennis and badminton (both competition and participation level)
  • Runs after-school and during-school sports programs

Archery Range

  • Runs school programs
  • Hosts national and state competitions
  • Forms part of the the parklands

Telstra Stadium

  • In 2003 1.6 million people visited Telstra Stadium for World Cup Rugby, NRL matches including the Grand Final, AFL matches and ING Cup cricket matches.

SuperDome

  • Sydney SuperDome is the largest and most techonologically advanced indoor entertainment and sporting arena in Australia
  • Holds 2 World records for attracting crowds:
    - 2 October 1999 NBL Basketball Sydney vs Canberra with a crowd of 17,143
    - 31 July 2004 Commonwealth Bank Netball Trophy Sydney Swifts vs Melbourne Phoenix with a crowd of 13,463
