It may have started with ‘Bend it Like Beckham’, but the growth of women’s soccer is showing no signs of slowing down in Australia.

Young girls aged six to sixteen are putting on their boots for the Sydney Olympic Park soccer coaching clinic with the NSW Women’s soccer team, The Sapphires, on Thursday 21 April, 2005 as part of Sydney Olympic Park’s exciting school holiday program, Kids in the Park.

The participation rate for girls in soccer in Australia has almost doubled in the past three years. It is also interesting to note that while the number of children participating in sport increased by just under 4% between 2000 to 2003, the number playing soccer increased by an incredible 17.7%.

Sapphires Captain Taryn Rockall said, “Holding a coaching clinic for girl’s soccer would have been unheard of a few years ago, now we have so many young girls taking the sport up and really getting involved - the growth is incredibly exciting for the sport. I think I need to start picking up my game! It is also great to be able to use the world class facilities at Sydney Olympic Park, which allows the kids to experience the real thing.”

Sydney Olympic Park’s Kids in the Park program runs from Sunday April 10 – Sunday April 24, 2005. The Sapphires are part of an exciting line-up of elite sporting teams offering the athletes of the future a chance to learn skills from their heroes. The Sydney Bulldogs, Wests Tigers and the Sydney Swans are also getting involved with the clinics.
