State Plan - A New Direction for NSW

Sydney SuperDome now ranked 6th in the world

Pollstar Magazine has just released the first quarter figures for indoor arenas and Australia’s Sydney SuperDome has been ranked 6th in the world.

For over a decade, Pollstar has provided music concert industry professionals with the most reliable and accurate source of Route Book (concert tour schedules), box office results, industry directories, news and other industry related data services.

The Sydney SuperDome has over the last 18 months slowly entered the charts and overtaken many of its competitors in the rankings.

In final figures for 2004 released from Pollstar in January, the Sydney SuperDome was positioned 25th in the Top 100 arenas and was the only Australian venue ranked for the 2004 year.

Confidence in the Sydney SuperDome from international artists, local promoters and the concert going audience of Greater Sydney and regional NSW has been responsible for the rise in the world ranking. Audiences this past summer season have been treated to performances from Andrea Bocelli(2), Disney Live (9), Eagles(4), Rod Stewart(2), Neil Diamond(3), JA Rule, WWE, John Edward, Green Day, Bette Midler(4) and most recently Destiny’s Child. Many of these performances resulted in multiple dates being added after initial ticket sales were launched. This successful schedule demonstrated the enormous Audience Reach that the location of the Sydney SuperDome in Sydney Olympic Park has, not only for Sydney, but for regional NSW. Audience Reach reflects the strength of audience numbers for any particular entertainment venue.

Future dates currently with tickets on sale will see multiple performances from Kylie Minogue, Crusty Demons, Disney On Ice and Delta Goodrem. Add to these performances strong ticket sales for the Netball Test, which was a sellout last year, and the Netball Double Header and indicators are that ticket sales will keep the momentum of the last 6 months.

Sydney SuperDome management expect to announce soon new scheduled dates for the second half of 2005, some being announcements of major international concert artists, an extraordinary ice circus spectacular in September school holidays, a kids extravaganza for January 2006 school holidays and also confirming the dates for the 4th consecutive hosting of the Annual Aria Music Awards in October.

Sydney SuperDome CEO David Humphreys said “…this achievement is tribute to the efforts of a great team of professional team of employees. It truly positions the venue on a global scale.” The Sydney SuperDome was nominated by Pollstar for International Venue of the year in 2004 but was pipped at the post by the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The Sydney SuperDome General Manager of Business Development, Don Elford said “People come to events, not particularly venues. It is our responsibility to enhance that event experience wherever possible and for the time being that is our focus. The success is testament to the fact that people are looking to get the best entertainment bang for their buck.”
