State member for Auburn, Barbara Perry has welcomed the development of a new regional park at Blaxland Common on the Parramatta River, as part of the continuing development of the Parklands of Sydney Olympic Park.
Mrs Perry said the two-stage $15 million development is part of a wider vision for the precinct and its 425Ha of parklands.
“An important part of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s vision for the Olympic precinct is to create a world class urban parkland,” she said.
“This project will add impetus to this vision by creating a new 20 Ha waterfront place for the people of Sydney.”
“The Parklands at Sydney Olympic Park are just five years old, except for the Bicentennial Park, and this development will form an important part of the evolving transformation and activation of the Parklands in the area, catering for recreational demands at a local and regional level.”
“A major component of the Blaxland Common development will be the extension of Jamieson Street to the waterfront, providing a new public entrance to the adjoining heritage listed precinct Newington Armory – a truly hidden treasure,” Ms Perry said.
“This development is certainly a rare opportunity, given its size, river frontage, accessibility, and views.”
“Once complete, stage-one of the project will offer unique waterfront access, new playground and BBQ/picnic facilities, water features and picturesque views of the surrounding area,” Ms Perry added.
There are also plans underway for a new alfresco style café, which will offer indoor and outdoor dining facilities.
“More than 40,000 people are expected to establish their homes in Newington, Rhodes, Sydney Olympic Park, and Homebush Bay West by 2020. The continuing development of the parklands in this subregion is vital, as it is regarded as one of the most rapidly growing areas of Sydney with around $5 billion of new property investment expected to occur in Sydney Olympic Park alone,” Mr Newman added.
The first stage of the Blaxland Common parklands development will commence on 20 May 2006. It is anticipated that stage-one of construction will be complete by March 2007.
