24 June 2007
On Sunday, 24 June, everything sweet or savoury wrapped in pastry will be tempting visitors to Sydney Olympic Park for the ‘Finger in the Pie’ pastry-themed Boulevard Market on Olympic Boulevard.
Guest chef, James Konstantinidis from Oliveto Restaurant in Rhodes, will be showing onlookers how to prepare the perfect pastry no matter what’s cooking - from savoury tarts and pies to delicious baked desserts!
James has been a chef all his life and successfully created the popular ‘Jimmy the Greek’ label of dips that is still sold in delicatessens around the country.
“I didn’t really have a choice in becoming a chef,” states James. “It’s always been in my blood and now I just can’t imagine doing anything else.”
When he was five years old, James used to stand on an up-turned apple box frying fish and chips with his father in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. His family later set up a restaurant in Wellington called ‘The Walkabout’, before taking their business to the island of Milos in Greece, where a young James carefully honed his culinary skills.
James settled in Sydney in the mid 1970s where he continued to learn and practise his culinary craft, before opening his own restaurant in Rozelle called Never on Sunday in 1995.
“It was here that I really began to focus on Greek dips and pastries. I wanted to show the world all the wonderful aspects of Greek cuisine,” he added.
James is renowned for his delicious pastries and pies and will be demonstrating how to make Mediterranean-inspired pastries with cooking demonstrations at 11am, 12pm and 1pm.
For one Sunday every month, Sydney Olympic Park is transformed into a themed marketplace with a range of vibrant attractions and a colourful line-up of food, fashion and fun that will both entertain and educate. The Boulevard Market is perfect tor all ages! While parents are served some creative cooking ideas, the kids will be kept more than entertained with FREE arts and crafts at ‘Kids’ Kitchen Capers.’
So, to learn how to make the perfect pastry, head to the Boulevard Market between 9.00am and 2.00pm on Sunday, June 24 at Sydney Olympic Park.
