Whether you’re in the mood for an action-packed blockbuster, a laugh-out-loud comedy, a heart-wrenching drama or a romantic chick flick under the stars, the FREE Movies in The Overflow series at Sydney Olympic Park is back for another year and is sure to please cinema goers of all ages and viewing tastes.
Kicking off in the mystical land of Narnia on Saturday January 3rd, the outdoor movie series will open with a screening of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian – the perfect choice for mums, dads and kids alike.
Quick on the heels of this classical novel-turned-film will be box office blockbusters Kung Fu Panda, Wall-E and The Spiderwick Chronicles, explorer tale In the Shadow of the Moon, heart-wrenching Aussie flick The Black Balloon, wedding nightmare comedy 27 Dresses and the adventure fantasy tale Nim’s Island.
For those missing the Cold War antics of Maxwell Smart and Agent 99, Get Smart charts their hilarious journey as they go on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil KAOS.
At the other end of the spectrum is Academy Award winning Juno, the story of a whip-smart teenager who unexpectedly falls pregnant with her long-time friend and admirer Paulie. With a hit soundtrack, Juno has received critical acclaim across the globe, launching the career of young star Ellen Page and winning the 2007 Oscar for Best Screenplay.
Continuing with the Movies in The Overflow tradition of showcasing award-winning Australian documentaries and arthouse flicks, Salute is a documentary film that first debuted at the Sydney Film Festival in June 2008. Six years in the making, this historical flick explores the racial protest incident of the 1968 Mexico Olympics, uncovering what really happened from the mouths of all three athletes involved – Tommie Smith, John Carlos and of course, the late Peter Norman. Directed and produced by Norman’s nephew Matt Norman, the film aims to tell the story of the race… the human race.
There’ll also be a welcome return to the good old days with a presentation of both a short and feature film. Audiences will be treated to a taste of ‘Short Soup’, a selection of short films from a wide range of cultures, rarely seen in mainstream cinema. One short film will feature prior to the main film each night, cumulating in the presentation of the complete Short Soup series on the last night of Movies in The Overflow.
Mums and dads can enjoy some quiet time, with an exciting new Kids Activities Centre running 5.00-8.00pm every evening to keep the kids entertained. Kids will create a creature that lives in the Park and be challenged to solve the mystery message or complete a word search. Guided walks with the Park Ranger will also be on offer for everyone, go for a short walk and discover the Park at twilight.
“Movies in The Overflow is one of Sydney Olympic Park’s most popular events,” said Leah Tasker, Executive Manager, Marketing at Sydney Olympic Park. “We are expecting record crowds for the 2009 season under the stars.
“This is a perfect opportunity for families and friends to celebrate the summer holiday period without the added expense. Movies in The Overflow is about having the most fun possible with family and friends without spending a cent!” she added.
