Exhibition Elevates Sydney Olympic Park

29 October 2008

From November 15, Sydney Olympic Park will host Sublime Elevations, a FREE exhibition of sublime proportions that moves across genres and formats as it showcases the work of more than 50 artists from the Blue Mountains Artists Company (BMAC).

On display at the Armory Gallery, the exhibition will run every weekend up to January 25, 2009, and was inspired by the heritage-listed and unique environment that is the Blue Mountains.

“With geography that moves from 200 to 1,000 metres above sea-level, the landscape, mood and tone of the mountains changes dramatically,” said Curator Sophie Seeger.

Sublime Elevations is a sample of the diversity and strength of Blue Mountains artists – the only commonality of the artworks is that they were created at sublime elevations – the genre and subject matter is hugely diverse, from the landscape to the figurative and abstract.

“I think the appreciation of the unique landscape has been instrumental in attracting so many artists to the Mountains to live and create. It provides a space that is at once serene and exciting, and has become a visual stimulation to many artists,” she added.

Featuring the works of a wide range of artists, from new, emerging artists to award-winning artists, the exhibition features paintings, installations, photography, woven sculptures and hand-made designer glass jewellery.

Works from award-winning photographer Peter Adams, one of Australia's most respected water colourists John Caldwell, super-realist Teri Hiley and award-winning artists Paul du Moulin and Jane Canfield will be displayed.

With designs featured at 2008 Rosemount Australian Fashion Week and the 2008 inaugural Sydney Fashion Festival, unique jewellery designer, Leslie Hunter-Webb will also have some beautiful pieces on display at Sublime Elevations.

The show will be housed in the Armory Gallery at Newington and is set among a 52-hectare riverside landscape of undulating hills and woodlands.

Some of the artists from Sublime Elevations have called Newington Armory home at one stage, thanks to Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s Artists in Residence Program. The Newington Armory’s artist's facility can accommodate up to 21 artists at a time, working in the disciplines of painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking, and provides artists with the inspiration and support required to create amazing artworks.

Open every weekend from 9am to 5pm, the exhibition is housed at the Armory Gallery, which is located alongside the Wharf Entrance on the Parramatta River at Building 18. Visitors to the exhibition can meet the artists and on request, personal workshops with artist Jane Canfield can be arranged.

The BMAC is a member-based community organisation committed to providing exhibition opportunities and professional development across all genres of the arts in the Blue Mountains community. This is the second year that Sydney Olympic Park Authority has partnered with BMAC.
