Stars of the future at Sydney Olympic Park

23 September 2008

It’s time to get those creative juices flowing! Future Nicole Kidmans, Henry Lawsons and Ken Dones will be able to hone their artistic skills these spring school holidays with a range of acting, writing and craft activities on offer at Sydney Olympic Park.

For those tweens and teens with Oscar glory in their sights, tutors from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) will be working with budding stars to develop their screen acting and film-making skills at Sydney Olympic Park. Participants will develop their on-screen ‘it factor’ as they research characters from the past and devise and shoot a short story during the NIDA Filmmaking & Screen Acting Workshop. With a DVD of their film to take home with them after the NIDA program, this is an ideal opportunity for teens to get their shot to stardom and show off their movie debut to friends at school!

For those more inclined to be ‘behind the scenes’, Vogel Award winner Bernard Cohen will run three fun and inspiring Creative Writing Workshops. The workshops will be separated into three two-hour sessions, allowing future Australian novelists to hone their character, setting and plot skills as they construct a range of imaginative, dramatic, heart-wrenching and hilarious written works. Cohen will also be giving advice to young people ready to take the next big step into high school, conducting a separate, specialised Writing Workshop for the NSW Selective Schools Test.

Kids with a madness for melody will be reinvigorated by the FREE ‘Music Madness in The Overflow’ in between their writing, acting and craft activities. For two weeks in October, The Overflow will come alive with the sound of music in the form of two interesting and unique varieties of sound – The Bird Orchestra, a musical group made up of various bird sounds and unique instruments, and Junk Jungle, a percussion workshop of pans, drums, exotic headdresses, rhythm and movement.

Still haven’t found anything to whet the creative appetite? To cap off the artistic atmosphere at Sydney Olympic Park, kids aged four years and over can participate in Kites n Cakes, learning the art of kite flying while slurping on cool juices and munching on delicious baked goods. This Do-it-Yourself workshop will be conducted by professional kite manufacturers, who will provide tips on how to assemble, decorate and, most importantly, fly kites!

Parents looking for ways to challenge, stimulate, amuse or simply wear out their creative kids these spring school holidays have so many options at Sydney Olympic Park!

Activities will take place from 27 September to 12 October 2008. To find out more about the Kids in the Park activities, visit www.kidsinthepark.com.au or call 02 9714 7888.
