30 March 2009
Sydney Olympic Park Authority on Sunday welcomed Dr Manohan Singh Gill, the Indian Minister for Sport and Youth Affairs, to Sydney Olympic Park.
Dr Gill’s visit came as India prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi from 3 to 14 October 2010.
The visit included a guided tour of Sydney Olympic Park’s extensive parklands and recreational facilities and its growing commercial town centre.
Dr Gill said he was impressed by the Park’s 425 hectares of open spaces and their location in the geographic heart of Sydney, as well as the strong growth of the commercial town centre, which now includes almost 100 organisations.
The visit also included tours of ANZ Stadium, the Aquatic and Hockey centres, and the new 5-star Pullman Hotel, and Dr Gill indicated his interest in the growing utilisation of the venues since the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games as the Park has grown to accommodate almost 5,000 events a year.
Dr Gill also showed a strong interest in the enduring environmental legacy of the Sydney Games, particularly the Park’s world-recognised WRAMS water recycling scheme, which each year saves about 850 million litres of drinking water.
Mr Sandy Hollway AO, Board Member Australia–India Council and former CEO of the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, hosted the visit, which was arranged by the Australian International Sporting Events Secretariat, the NSW Department of State and Regional Development and Sydney Olympic Park Authority.
