This Sunday 29th October 2006, Newington Armory at Sydney Olympic Park will play host to Australia’s premiere taiko drumming group – TaikOz.
The free concert will showcase the excitement of the TaikOz drummers as they launch themselves into a high-energy performance on the dynamic Japanese taiko drums.
TaikOz is the result of years of intense training by a small group of gifted musicians directed by Ian Cleworth, and featuring Riley Lee, Australia’s own grandmaster of the shakuhachi flute.
The group has achieved international acclaim for the sustained and highly disciplined nature of their work, which is reflected in their truly stunning level of physical virtuosity.
Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s Director Arts Development, Scott O’Hara, describes TAIKOZ as one of Australia’s pre-eminent world music ensembles.
“Their performance at the Armory is a taste of things to come. As part of our Arts and Cultural Strategy, we will regularly present performing arts programs that respond to Sydney’s diverse musical culture and also offer unique opportunities for audience participation,” Mr O’Hara said.
“People interested in experiencing the passion, theatre, and awe-inspiring sound of the Japanese drum group in the wonderful surrounds of Newington Armory this weekend should reserve their place quickly,” Mr O’Hara added.
There are also limited places available for a FREE participatory workshop on the day.
To reserve your place at the workshop or a 6-week course in Japanese drumming, contact admin@taikoz.com or phone 02 9572 8595
