WWII BUILDING HOSTS ARTExpress

EXHIBITION AT SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK

A former Naval explosive store at Newington Armory, Sydney Olympic Park will now become home to an array of new art exhibitions and cultural displays.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation Sandra Nori announced the initiative at the opening of the ARTExpress exhibition at Sydney Olympic Park.

“Its part of a new arts and cultural strategy for Sydney Olympic Park, which will see the area transformed into an innovative arts and cultural precinct over the next ten years

“An Arts Development Advisory Committee has been developed to support the program.

“The Committee will champion the role of Sydney Olympic Park as a Centre for the Arts and Cultural Development by providing relevant information and advice to the SOPA Board enabling the Park to implement, monitor and review its arts and cultural strategy,” Minister Nori said.

ARTExpress is the first exhibition to feature in the new gallery space in Building 18 of the Newington Armory.

The works, on display until the 22nd of April, will represent by far the largest metropolitan ARTExpress exhibition, and showcase the creative talents of students from across Western Sydney.

ARTExpress at the Armory has a strong focus on new media, and will play a key role in establishing an ongoing, innovative arts presence at Sydney Olympic Park”, Minister Nori added.

The new Sydney Olympic Park Arts Development Advisory Committee comprises representatives from arts and cultural professions including: Dr Paolo Totaro AM board member of Vocational Education and Training, media broadcaster Lex Marinos OAM, Roger Wilkins Director-General for Arts for the NSW Government, Tiffany Lee-Shoy Regional Cultural Planner for WSROC, Executive Director of the Music Council of Australia Dick Letts AM, Head of School, Contemporary Arts University of Western Sydney Associate Professor Julian Knowles, recently appointed Sydney Festival Artistic Director, Fergus Linehan and freelance visual arts experts Leon Parossien AM and Dinah Dysart.
