NSW Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation Sandra Nori today launched a new premiere cycling festival to be held at Sydney Olympic Park over three days, 21-23 October.

“The 2005 Festival of Cycling will have something for everyone, including the popular Portfolio Partners Sydney Spring Cycle, a Bicycling Australia trade show, and plenty of other cycling related activities for the whole family,” Minister Nori said.

The 2005 Festival has been made possible as a result of the collaborative effort of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, the Cycling Promotion Fund, Bicycle New South Wales, Bicycling Australia, Retail Cycle Traders Australia and the Heart Foundation.

“This first time collaboration between these organisations to bring Sydney this premiere event, reinforces the importance of providing quality leisure experiences and creating active healthy communities,” Minister Nori added.

During the launch there will be a minute’s silence for the champion Australian cyclist, Amy Gillett, who tragically died in a recent road mishap in Germany.

The closeness of the bicycling community was reinforced with the $10,000 donation by the bicycling associations as seed money for the Amy Gillett-Safe Cycling Foundation. The Department of Sport and Recreation are also contributing with a grant of $1,000. These cheques will be presented at the breakfast.

The 2005 Festival of Cycling will become a key event in Sydney Olympic Park’s overall leisure and cycling strategy, which will eventually see the precinct become a prominent ‘cycling town’.

“The Australian passion for cycling has dramatically increased, according to Government statistics - it’s now the fourth most popular physical activity - more popular than golf, and fishing” she said.

A highlight of the 2005 Festival of Cycling will be Sydney Olympic Park’s new self-guided audio tours that provide visitors to the Park with a rich audio story about the history, the achievements and the future plans for the precinct. Whether on bike or foot, the audio tours, which operate via an MP3 player, give visitors a new understanding and insight into the facilities on offer at Sydney Olympic Park.

“With more than 35 kilometres of cycle ways, the Park provides the ideal venue to rediscover the outdoors. For the first time these new audio tours will be on offer to coincide with the Festival of Cycling in October, encouraging cyclists to explore the Park,” Minister Nori said.
