Sydney Olympic Park Authority in cooperation with Variety – The Children’s Charity of New South Wales has installed a ‘Liberty Swing’ in the Village Green at Bicentennial Park at Sydney Olympic Park.
The world-first Australian designed and manufactured device allows children and adults who are wheel chair users to enjoy the fun and sensation of swinging.
Chief Executive Officer for the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, Brian Newman says the swing is an important component of the playground facilities on offer at the Olympic precinct.
“The Liberty Swing is a highly engineered product and ensures that children and adults of all ages and abilities now have an opportunity to participate in our outdoor playground facilities,” Mr Newman said.
The swing was first developed by Wayne Devine who wanted children who were wheelchair users to have an opportunity to swing like every other child, and as a result produced the first ‘Liberty Swing’ in 1988. It took him 13 years to create.
Today there are more than 35 ‘Liberty Swings’ Australia wide. The swing has a number of unique features including ramp access, a wheel locking mechanism, safety harness and complies with Australian safety standards.
Variety – the Children’s Charity of New South Wales is committed to providing a ‘Liberty Swing’ to every municipality in Australia so that children and adults with a disability will have an opportunity to experience the thrill of having a swing in the park.
