State Plan - A New Direction for NSW

MEDIA RELEASE

5 April 2005

New Tour for Telstra Stadium

Olympic legends Lord Sebastian Coe and Daley Thompson today joined NSW Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Sandra Nori, to launch a new high-tech tour for Telstra Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park.

“The‘Explore’ tour is unique in that it captures the greatest moments of the 2000 Olympic Games and other brilliant events that have taken place at the stadium since then,” Ms Nori said.

“The state-of-the-art tour takes visitors through all the passages and burrows of the Stadium giving them first hand experience of where sporting legends gear up for their performance and get a final pep talk from their coach. They get unique insight into how the venue gets ready for major events and see where sporting commentators watch from the media room and carve their words into history.

The Stadium has hosted an impressive array of international events all of which this tour highlights from the Olympics to the Rugby World Cup final, NRL and State of Origin grand finals and unforgettable Bledisloe matches.

“This tour has a wide range of benefits for both Telstra Stadium and Sydney Olympic Park as a world-class Olympic precinct and tourism destination,” Ms Nori said.

The new tour forms part of the overall strategy for Sydney Olympic Park that will see the precinct develop, over the next twenty years, into a thriving and dynamic township.

“It highlights why this precinct will continue to be a major tourist attraction for many years to come,” Minister Nori added.

“The Olympics left behind a legacy that Sydneysiders and visitors are still prospering from almost 5 years later.

More than 6.5 million visitors come to Sydney Olympic Park each year where they enjoy a diverse range of leisure, cultural, entertainment, sporting and educational activities.

“That number is expected to grow as Sydney Olympic Park Authority develops the precinct and continues to attract world class national and international events to the precinct.”
