State Plan - A New Direction for NSW

Monday, 6 March 2005

The fairytale begins at Sydney Olympic Park

Sydney Olympic Park will this month host the largest metropolitan art exhibition featuring works from NSW School students as part of ARTEXPRESS 2006.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Sandra Nori said the exhibition based at Newington Armory, reinforced Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s commitment to provide quality art and cultural exhibitions and activities for the people of Sydney.

“The exhibition, subtitled ‘Fairytale Ending’, will feature works from 70 students mainly from schools in Sydney’s west, and many with a strong focus on new media and digital technology.”

“It supports a broader arts and cultural strategy for Sydney Olympic Park Authority, which will see the Park transformed into an innovative arts and cultural precinct over the next ten years,” Minister Nori said.

It’s the second year that Sydney Olympic Park has hosted the western Sydney exhibition for ARTEXPRESS, and the start of a busy year for the Authority that will see an increase in the impressive array of arts and cultural facilities already available at the Park, according to the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer Brian Newman.

“In the coming months, Sydney Olympic Park will be opening an additional 19 open plan studios for artists based within Newington Armory,” said Mr Newman

“These studios will cater for painters, sculptors, ceramicists, printmakers and writers, as well as offering new areas for wood, metal and stonework,” said Mr Newman added.

The new artists’ studios and workshops will include an indoor performance space, seating 240 people; and an outdoor stage, which caters for an audience of up to 2,500 and the 500-sqm-exhibition space, which will host the 2006 ARTEXPRESS exhibition.

ARTEXPRESS at the Armory, Sydney Olympic Park will be opened at 6pm on 6 March 2006. The display will continue until 30 April 2006. For information and opening times please visit www.sydneyolympicpark.com.au
