State Plan - A New Direction for NSW

Sydney Olympic Park hosts 2006 Monster BMX Games

Sydney Olympic Park (SOPA) will host, for the first time, one of the largest BMX events for 2006, the Monster BMX Games, over the Australia Day weekend, announced Minister for Tourism and Sport and Recreation, Sandra Nori

The action packed event will see some of Australia’s best BMX riders competing for their share of the $20,000 prize money said Ms Nori.

“The 2006 Monster BMX Games will be the biggest event of its kind to be held in Sydney,” said Ms Nori.

“The games will bring some of the best BMX riders to Sydney Olympic Park and is sure to attract not only riders but action-sports fans from all over the country,” she said.

The event is scheduled to take place from 26th - 29th January 2006, coinciding with Australia Day and the ‘Big Day Out’ celebrations at Sydney Olympic Park. The Homebush Bay Brewery ‘King of Dirt’ will take place on Thursday 26th January with Vert and Mini ramp activities taking place on Saturday 28th January and Flatland and Park events occurring on Sunday 29 January.

The Games have been moved forward this year to align with ‘X-Air’, a major international event that takes place in New Zealand and is considered Australasia’s premiere action sports competition.

Riders that have already expressed interest in attending the 2006 Monster BMX Games are: Mike Daly, Alistair Whitton, Gary Young, Jay Miron, Ryan Guettler, Ryan Nyquist, Josh Harrington, Colin Mackay, Corey Bohan, Brendan Jones, Dave Dillewaard, Mike Escamilla, Chad Kagy, Matt Fairbairn, Tim Wood, Luke Fink, Zach Shaw.

Sydney Olympic Park Authority is sponsoring the 2006 BMX Monster Games, which incorporates five freestyle BMX disciplines.

“It is great to see that the new action sports facility at SOPA, Monster, is being used for such a prestigious international action event,” Ms Nori said.

Some of Australia’s best BMX riders will be assessing the site at Sydney Olympic Park this Monday, 9 January, from 10am as they prepare to take on some of the world’s best on 26 January.

‘Monster’, the first international standard Skate Park in the Southern Hemisphere for skateboarders, aggressive inline skaters and freestyle BMX riders opened at Sydney Olympic Park opened 15 November 2006.

‘Monster’ features one of the largest competition-sized vert ramps in Australia, and includes a street course and mini-ramp for skaters of all levels.

“This new action sports facility, ‘Monster’ ensures that the precinct now offers something for all action sports fans from BMX riders to skaters, and for all levels from international competitors to local kids who just want to come out and have fun or test their skill,” Ms Nori said.

“While ‘Monster’ targets the youth market, the addition of the skate park is an important component of the Park’s future development as an all-round, recreational and leisure destination,” she said
