The Australia Day celebrations held by Auburn Council and the Sydney Olympic Park Authority have won State-wide acclaim for embracing Australia's diverse multicultural community.
The celebrations were declared the Best Cultural Event in NSW at the annual Local Government Awards Evening on Monday, 28 July, 2003.
Council's General Manager, Ray Brownlee and Sydney Olympic Park Authority's Chief Executive Officer, Brian Newman accepted the award on behalf of the two organisations.
Mr Brownlee said Council was delighted the celebrations had won acclaim in only their second year of operation with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA).
"We are very proud of the success of our second joint Australia Day celebrations with SOPA at Bicentennial Park," he said.
"Our unique partnership for this event has broken new ground as it is the only Australia Day event in NSW which is co-hosted by Local Government and State Government authorities.
Brian Newman said the theme of the event - Many Cultures - One Community - was embodied the spirit which exists in our Local Government Area, of which Sydney Olympic Park is part.
"Australia Day celebrations at Sydney Olympic Park were a great collaborative and community effort," Mr Newman said.
"Local restaurants, community groups and performers all played an important role in continuing the theme of 'Many Cultures - One Community' with their displays of international cuisine and entertainment. Bicentennial Park provided the perfect backdrop for the festivities."
A feature of the event was the community village that brought together local community groups, commercial stalls, food stalls and corporate stalls including the NSW Police, Auburn Council, State Emergency Service (SES), Auburn Council and SOPA.
