‘Monster’, the first international standard Skate Park in the Southern Hemisphere for skateboarders, aggressive inline skaters and freestyle BMX riders opened at Sydney Olympic Park today, said Sandra Nori, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation.
‘Monster’ features one of the largest competition-sized vert ramps in Australia, and includes a street course and mini-ramp for skaters of all levels.
“This new action sports facility, ‘Monster’ ensures that the precinct now offers something for all action sports fans especially skaters, whether they be locals or tourists visiting the park,” Ms Nori said.
“While ‘Monster’ targets the youth market, the addition of the skate park is an important component of the Park’s future development as an all-round, recreational and leisure destination,” she said.
The ‘Monster’ skate park comes only weeks after the launch of a new mountain cross facility at the Park, which was put to the test during the 2005 Festival of Cycling in late October.
“The Mountain Cross facility has already proven to be an enormous success and it’s anticipated that these new action sports facilities will draw more visitors to the park,” said Brian Newman Sydney Olympic Park Authority CEO.
“We identified an opportunity to take a leading position in action sports in Australia and by taking our facilities to the next level in action sports we are providing an experience not available anywhere else in Australia,” he said.
“Monster will provide up and coming skating talent the facilities they need to compete in action sports at an international level” said Ms Nori.
‘Monster’ is located on Grand Parade, Sydney Olympic Park. The skate park will be open daily with three session times for riders – 10am to 2pm; 2pm to 6pm; and 6pm to 10pm – with a four-hour session costing $8 for non-members and $6 for members.
