State Plan - A New Direction for NSW

Netball double-header at Sydney Olympic Park shatters world record in ticket sales

With 36 hours to go before the Commonwealth Bank Trophy netball double-header at Sydney SuperDome, Sydney Olympic Park this Friday evening 30 July, ticket sales are already shattering world record figures.

Netball NSW have confirmed the world's largest netball crowd, with 12,900 tickets sold by 5pm Wednesday 28 July.

The record crowd easily surpasses the previous record at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester when 10,500 netball fans saw the thrilling Grand Final match between Australia and New Zealand.

"We have surpassed our own expectations and we are still a day and half away from the event" said Netball NSW General Manager, Ian Harkness.

Tony Houhlias, Manager Sports Development at Sydney Olympic Park says the record crowds for netball at Australia's leading sports precinct is a result of the strong partnership between Sydney Olympic Park and Netball NSW.

"This partnership addresses not only elite netball but also youth and development programs and coaching clinics," Tony said.

The first match will begin at 6.30pm as the fifth placed Hunter Jaegers take the court and meet fourth placed interstate rivals, Melbourne Kestrels.

The leading Commonwealth Bank Trophy team, Sydney TAB Swifts, will then take to centre court at 8.30pm as the battle of the border continues, challenging Melbourne Phoenix in a replay of the 2003 Commonwealth Bank Trophy Grand Final match at the SuperDome.

Tickets are still available through Ticketek on 9266 4800 or by logging on to www.ticketek.com.au.

Doors will open at 5.30PM with the first game between the Hunter Jaegers and Melbourne Kestrels at 6.30pm before the Sydney TAB Swifts meet Melbourne Phoenix at 8.30pm.

Spectators are encouraged to come dressed in blue and yellow to win an instant prize at the door.
