Access Advisory Committee

Community consultation is achieved through the Access Advisory Committee, which reports to the Authority's Chief Executive Officer. The Committee comprises members drawn from peak disability groups and agencies, private consultancies as well as personnel from the Authority. The Committee generally meets 3-4 times a year.

The role of the Access Advisory Committee is to provide the Authority with advice, including recommendations for appropriate strategies and actions, on a broad range of matters relating to the assessment and management of equitable access provisions and facilities for persons with a disability at Sydney Olympic Park.

All SOPA developments at Sydney Olympic Park are required to be presented to the Committee who may endorse the proposal with or without the consideration of additional or appropriate access requirements.

As at July 2006, the Access Advisory Committee comprised the following members;

Access Advisory Committee Achievements 2002-2006

November 2006

  • Endorsed Development Site 4B subject to some minor design considerations.
  • Endorsed Development Sites 6 and 7 subject to some minor design considerations.
  • Endorsed internal fit –out of Development Site 5 subject to some minor design considerations.
  • Endorsed a Brickpit Ring maintenance building as a public viewing proposal subject to the view experience being provided at the ground level of the building.
  • Committee discussed the Authority’s proposal to prepare a new version of the 2002 Access Guidelines.
  • Committee noted that the Authority had sponsored the;
    • Sydney International Wheelchair Tennis Open
    • Special Children’s Xmas Party at the Showground
    • Funding of $35,000 for the Liberty Swing installation
    • Funding to support the International Day of People with a Disability organised by the Department of Ageing, Disability & Home Care

July 2006

  • Endorsed new Sofitel Hotel proposal subject to some design amendments.
  • Endorsed new Formule 1 Budget Hotel proposal subject to minor design considerations.
  • Undertook field trip of accessible facilities at the Newington Armory, the Brickpit Ring Walk, Liberty Swing and new Sydney Olympic Park development sites.
  • Ms Kathleen Brewster replaced Mr John Cormack on the committee.
  • Ms Ebru Sumaktas will be replacing Ms Luisa Ferronato on the committee.

March 2006

  • Endorsed proposed Yulang/Overflow pub proposal subject to some design amendments.
  • Provided final endorsement on the Sydney Olympic Park Authority Disability Action Plan 2006-2008 subject to minor editorial changes.
  • Discussed a replacement member for the NSW Ministerial Advisory Committee on Ageing representative who resigned in November 2005.
  • Acknowledged that the liberty swing gifting from Variety, the Children's Charity, would be installed in Bicentennial Park and would have play elements incorporated within the required fencing.
  • Noted that the Authority would be investigating the provision of secondary compliant access pathways into the existing State Sports Centre.
  • Noted the letter of appreciation from DADHC recognising the Authority's contributions towards the International Day of People with a Disability held on 30 November 2005.

November 2005

  • Participated in presentation from Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission on contemporary matters relating to disability access.
    Members completed review of the former Achieving Access website information.
  • Members to undertake review of Draft Disability Action Plan for 2006-2008.
  • Members updated as to the Authority's Access achievements including sponsorship of certain events, updated tactual maps, promotional brochures containing access information and the website updated to reflect appropriate terminology and information.
  • Mr John Cormack, representing the NSW Ministerial Advisory Committee on Ageing, regretfully was resigning from the Access Advisory Committee due to other commitments.

July 2005

  • Presentation from Standards Australia relating to status of various disability access standards.
  • Committee to review former Olympic Co-ordination Authority/Sydney Olympic Park Authority Achieving Access website information.
  • Update on Sydney Olympic Park Authority developments provided.
  • Committee to review companion document to the Access Guidelines.

March 2005

  • Grand Mercure Accor Hotel endorsed subject to further detailed design.
  • Brickpit Ring progress noted.
  • Discussion held on a companion document to the Sydney Olympic Park Authority Access Guidelines.
  • Committee noted the Authority's requirement to prepare a new Disability Action Plan for 2005-2008.

November 2004

  • Wisteria Cafe proposal endorsed subject to compliance with a number of requirements.
  • The Brickpit Ring proposal endorsed subject to further detailed design.
  • Chair updated the Committee on agreed access issues for the eastern end entry works to Sydney Olympic Park Railway Station.
  • Disability Action Plan/Access Advisory Committee achievements for 2002/2004 tabled.

July 2004

  • Wayfinding Workshop with full Committee participation
  • Comments received by members on Parklands Wayfinding Strategy Report
  • Comments received by Chair on Eastern end Railway proposal.
