Environment

The 'Green Games' were the catalyst for Sydney Olympic Park's transformation from a badly degraded area into a world-recognised environmental showpiece, resulting in:

  • successful remediation and restoration of approximately 160 hectares of badly degraded land and creation of one of the largest urban parklands in Australia (425 hectares).
  • Development of world class venues and facilities for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, designed with a strong focus on: energy and water conservation, sustainable materials selection, pollution control, and waste management and minimisation.
  • Conservation and enhancement of remnant wetlands and forest, and native flora and fauna including the endangered Green and Golden Bell Frog.
  • Establishment of Australia's first large scale urban water recycling system, which saves approximately 850 million litres of drinking water each year.
  • Extensive use of renewable energy across the Park.
  • Development of environmental education, interpretation and research programs.

The Sydney Olympic Park Authority seeks to build on these environmental legacies in developing and managing Sydney Olympic Park.  This commitment to environmental sustainability is underpinned by the Authority's legislative and corporate charter:

  • The Sydney Olympic Park Authority Act 2001 establishes the Authority's commitment to environmentally sustainable development.
  • Environmental guidelines, and a Sustainability Strategy, inform Park operations and development.
