The Red-necked Stint is the smallest bird to migrate from its breeding grounds in Siberia and Alaska to Australia, its wingspan being only 29-33cm. In Australasia, this bird prefers sheltered inlets, bays, lagoons and estuaries with intertidal mudflats. Food is caught with its short black bill near or on the surface of the mud. The species is gregarious and is often found in large flocks both when feeding and roosting. In the Parramatta River estuary, this species is not often seen but occasionally visits Newington Nature Reserve and the Waterbird Refuge in the Bicentennial Park wetlands.
