Remediated lands produce variable volumes of "leachate" (contaminated groundwater) each year that must be contained and treated without the risk of public contact. A high level environmental due diligence approach has been adopted in the management of ten landfills and their leachate management systems. The components of these systems include:
Since the mid-1990's, several of the systems have been modified as a result of other site construction activities, integration of landfill systems built under different contracts and changes in acceptance criteria/policy by statutory authorities.
In consultation with the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change, comprehensive landfill environmental management and monitoring plans have been developed to ensure the long-term integrity and ongoing environmental compliance of its leachate management systems.
