Ongoing Management of Remediated Lands

Remediated lands also produce variable volumes of "leachate" (contaminated groundwater) each year that must be contained and treated without the risk of public contact. A high level environmental due diligence approach has been adopted in the management of ten landfills and their leachate management systems. The components of these systems include:

  • a network of leachate collection drains
  • transport
  • monitoring
  • maintenance infrastructure

Since the mid-1990's, several of the systems have been modified as a result of other site construction activities, integration of landfill systems built under different contracts and changes in acceptance criteria/policy by statutory authorities.

In consultation with the NSW Environment Protection Authority, comprehensive landfill environmental management and monitoring plans have been developed to ensure the long-term integrity and ongoing environmental compliance of its leachate management systems.

The Sydney Olympic Park Authority also conducts a number of research programs on leachate toxicity.

Consistent with the Authority's Sustainable Policy to encourage innovation and best practice sustainable solutions, the Authority has recently engaged a team of specialists to review its current landfill leachate disposal practices and investigate possible alternative sustainable solutions.

If feasible alternative options are identified, the Authority will provide more detailed information to interested parties and seek their views.
