Excursion Description
This curriculum based program takes Stage 1 students on a fun and exciting journey through the wetlands and dry forest environments of Bicentennial Park as seen through the eyes of the local Aboriginal people – the Wangal. Students will gain an understanding of traditional Aboriginal life and the natural resources that provide all food and materials required. Students will hear Dreaming stories related to the wetlands and will undertake craft activities, singing and dancing to Aboriginal sounds and music. The program has been designed by traditional D’harawal Knowledge Keeper Shannon Foster.

Activities are engaging, challenging and exploratory, and may include:

  • following the Dreaming Trail through the wetlands
  • exploring Aboriginal life and materials gathered from the local environment
  • playing indigenous games
  • creating Aboriginal inspired artworks


  • Identifies ways that everyday materials can be physically changed and combined for a particular purpose ST1-12MW 
  • Relates the properties of common materials for their use for particular purposes ST1-13MW 
  • Describes a range of manufactured products in the local environment and how their different purposes influence their design ST1-16P 
  • Describes a range of familiar information sources and technologies and how their purposes influence their design ST1-15I
  •  Describes some sources of light and sound that they sense in their daily lives ST1-6PW 
  • Identifies and describes significant people, events, places and sites in the local community over time (HT1-2) 
  • Thinks imaginatively and creatively about familiar topics, ideas and texts when responding to and composing texts (EN1-10C) 

Duration: full day (10am - 2pm)

Cost: $387.50 per class (20 – 30 students) or  $310 per small class (less than 20 students)
