Wetlands Trees 2016

Managing mangrove, saltmarsh, mosquitoes and migratory shorebird habitats in complex wetlands

Tuesday 1 November 2016

Registration – Sydney Olympic Park Education Centre at Bicentennial Park

Welcome and introduction

Brief consideration of mangrove degradation and the challenge of rehabilitation; introduction to mangrove eco-hydrology and threats of sea level rise

Brief introduction to saltmarsh reconstruction, rehabilitation and reassessment

Brief consideration of the control of mosquitoes and midges

Brief outline of migratory shorebird habit requirements

Morning tea

Field examinations of degraded and marginal mangrove areas, including examples of rehabilitation.

Visit areas of mangrove dieback and poor growth; note waterlogging and sedimentation; discuss rehabilitation; demonstrate tools and techniques of monitoring mangrove health.
Visit an automated water level gauge and share the trends in mean sea level in the locality; highlight the importance of micro-topography as a determinant of mangrove health; discuss likely scenarios of sea level rise responses.
Visit several reconstruction and regeneration sites highlighting suitability of saltmarsh regeneration; discuss practical weed control; demonstrate tools and techniques of monitoring saltmarsh health.

Field examinations of estuarine mosquito management and migratory shorebird habitats.
Visit several areas of mosquito hotspots in saltmarsh and mangrove habitats; highlight successful ecological solutions to mosquito problems; discuss current measures of mosquito control.
Visit areas of habitat restoration for migratory shorebirds; demonstrate tidal manipulations and resultant changes in inundation and habitat response; discuss short- and long-term management strategies.
