Koori Classroom Incorporating Indigenous Content
The Koori Classroom - Incorporating Aboriginal Content and Perspectives into your Teaching
18 November 2016, 8.30am-3pm
The new Australian Curriculum prioritises the teaching of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives as one of three major cross-curricular themes. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures priority aims to deepen students’ understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and knowledge traditions. So how do classroom teachers achieve this when they are already time-poor and often faced with either too little resources or conflicting information? How do teachers decide relevance and develop confidence in this complex learning area?
The Koori Classroom Professional Development Workshop unpacks how school education programs at Sydney Olympic Park have been authentically infused with Aboriginal and Torres Trait islander perspectives – connections to country and place; Aboriginal history, science and knowledge traditions. Our journey in curriculum design, resource gathering and network building will provide a pathway for you to do the same in your classroom and local environment. Meet Shannon Foster, D’harawal educator and gain ‘inside information’ about culture, science, language and sustainable use of local resources by Aboriginal people. The wetlands and woodlands of Bicentennial Park provide a living case study which will we will use to engage you throughout the day.
This workshop will cover cultural and ethical considerations, with practical cultural interpretation sessions showcasing Aboriginal use of native flora and fauna. Essentially, the day is about demystifying this curriculum priority through purposeful networking and open resource sharing. You will leave the workshop with increased subject knowledge, a fresh ‘community of practice’ and renewed confidence to infuse your own programs with engaging, authentic, Aboriginal content.
