Painting, sculpture, photography and new media - be inspired by the creativity of more than 75 young artists.

ARTEXPRESS at the Armory presents a showcase of the best bodies of work produced for the 2009 HSC Visual Arts examination. Building 18 has been transformed into a contemporary gallery of impressive dimensions. Its size allows Sydney Olympic Park to host the most comprehensive exhibition of ARTEXPRESS, and to feature large-scale works and expansive projections of film, video and digital animation. As the gateway to Western Sydney, our exhibition highlights the creativity of students from this region.

Assembled by freelance curator John Murphy, this year’s exhibition is entitled Birds that no longer live in my neighbourhood, and explores the idea that art may create beautiful, Arcadian visions; equally, it may expose the chaos and ugliness that is sometimes hidden from everyday view. The exhibition reveals ways in which art may negotiate between these two extremes through its inherent ability to effect change.

We are also pleased to offer the unique opportunity for classes visiting ARTEXPRESS to participate in an art workshop lead by Meredith Peach, our former artist in residence. Meri will lead students on the practical artistic elements and theoretical components based upon her environmental artwork ‘Perplexity’ and include historical aspects of the Armory. Each workshop is one hour in duration and only $6 per student, including GST. Students need to bring a small sketch pad and pencil or camera (if their medium is photography). Workshops are offered on the following dates: March 2-31, April 1, 19-23, 2010 (weekdays only).

People's Choice Award - Vote for your favourite artwork at ARTEXPRESS at the Armory and go into the draw to win a $1000 camera.
