ARTEXPRESS at the Armory

Painting, sculpture, photography and new media - be inspired by the creativity of more than 60 young artists.

ARTEXPRESS at the Armory presents a showcase of the best major works produced for the 2008 HSC Visual Arts examination.  Building 18 at Newington Armory has been transformed into a contemporary gallery of impressive dimensions. Its size allows Sydney Olympic Park to host the most comprehensive exhibition of ARTEXPRESS, and to feature large-scale works and expansive projections of film, video and digital animation. As the gateway to Western Sydney, our exhibition highlights the creativity of students from this region.  A free Education Resource for school teachers and students is being developed and will be available for download from our website from early February 2009.

Curated by John Murphy, this year’s exhibition is entitled Art of Darkness and features works that respond to the theme of time and the cycle of human life, delineated through the representation of a single day. The exhibition will focus particularly on the phenomenon of sleep and dreams, darkness appearing in the art works as a reflection of indefinite psychological states and emotions - of unconscious fears and desires.
