Location: Bicentennial Park Field Studies Centre
Description: 'Our Australia: You’re standing in it' consolidates concepts about the uniqueness of Australia's plants and animals in a maintained parkland environment. Education officers discuss the significance of mangrove wetlands and how humans have altered this environment over time. Through hands-on activities students investigate and describe the wetland area, list the living things that are found in it and describe relationships between them. The Badu Mangroves and planted forest offer opportunities for students to learn how Aboriginal people used the area and how it has changed since European settlement.
Using significant features within the Park, students develop an understanding of why people create specialised environments. The benefits and problems associated with human change will also be investigated in the development of ideas for the management and care of the Park's natural and built features.

Description: Cycles in Our World provides students with a first hand opportunity to experience a range of living and non-living cycles as they occur in a natural setting. Investigations in the mangrove forest focus on the life cycle of a mangrove tree from seed to mature tree, and cyclic tide motions. The dry environment component will explore seasonal and cyclic patterns of plants and animals and provide an opportunity for the students to create a food web. Macro – invertebrate observation enables students to see tiny creatures that they never knew existed in our waterways and learn how they are part of the cycle in an aquatic environment. Students will also observe the life cycle of insects that rely on water for part of their life cycle, including the dragonfly and the mosquito. Children will discover why wetlands have large mosquito populations. To consolidate life cycle knowledge students will develop a wetland food web gained from the knowledge that they have brought to the excursion and information they have found out.
