Students using solar panels at Renewable Energy ExcursionDescription: Proudly sponsored by EnergyAustralia, the ‘Renewable Energy’ program is a hands-on scientific program that focuses on the physical phenomena of solar, wind and movement energy sources. Activities are conducted in the solar powered building as well as the surrounding parklands of Newington Armory.

Students undertake activities using energy, generating wind turbines and hand held solar panels to build their own sustainable houses. Students also explore energy transformation using an energy bike, water turbine and hand generator.

The program also links sustainable living into renewable energy where students investigate waste reuse and practices that enhance biodiversity, such as planting a Bush Tucker Garden. Students explore the Bush Tucker Garden in Newington Armory to determine the best practices for our native plants.

Jason Project

Operation: Resilient Planet

Protecting Our Ecological Planet

Students will investigate Sydney Olympic Park Badu Mangroves - a protected ecosystem that has undergone enormous changes in the last 100 years.

Students will look at how this ecosystem is managed by taking on the role of researchers- they will have an opportunity to look at and discuss management strategies, pressures of humans needs and wants against the environment and recognize that they are able to make changes for future generations to keep biodiversity alive.

Students will use a variety of data collection methods to study and observe the health and viability of the mangrove environment.  Scientific equipment is used to test water quality, and facilitated discussions on management strategies used to protect water quality.  The mangrove wetland ecosystem contains organisms that are reliant on each other and the mangroves for food and habitat. Changes in the ecosystem need to be identified and followed up; therefore data collected by the students will be part of the wetland management process.  Investigating how we can protect and maintain mangroves for future generations will promote awareness and allow students to exchange ideas for protection and regeneration of mangroves globally.

Cost $ 13.20

Duration: 4 hour program
