the double world: free art exhibition

A mixed reality art installation that uses voice, code, sound, animation, light, performance and the natural acoustic and spatial environments of one of the historic Newington Armory buildings at Sydney Olympic Park is on display from 10.00am – 4.00pm every weekend until Sunday 10 November 2013 (inclusive).

The FREE exhibition at Building 20 at Newington Armory is a unique interpretation of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus, as expressed through the rich text of ‘The Sonnets to Orpheus’ by Rainer Maria Rilke.

Featuring the choreography of world-renowned dancer Meryl Tankard, with performances by Anton Lock recorded and mapped for installation media, the exhibition includes striking light installations, unique sound-scapes and other works showcased within three vast chambers of Newington Armory’s Building 20.

Artworks within the first chamber represent ‘order’ and the last chamber considers the Orpheus story theme of ‘chaos.’ The second and central chamber artistically showcases the point in the ancient Greek tragic love story when Orpheus crosses the River Styx in search of his lost wife Eurydice.

Also drawing inspiration from the heritage-listed Newington Armory’s connection to Sydney’s main water-way, the Parramatta River, the double world was created and produced by tranSTURM – an international group of designers, animators, architects, artists, composers and writers from the University of Technology Sydney and the Fachhochschule Kaiserslautern Germany. the double world showcases new works by Chris Bowman (Creative Director), Jason Benedek, Michael Day, Rachael Priddel, Michaela Coe, Daniel Scott and several more esteemed artists. It opened at Sydney Olympic Park on 19 October.
