International Volleyball Series Secured for Sydney
21 May 2015
The world’s best men’s volleyball team, Brazil, will take on Australia’s Volleyroos in Sydney, after the NSW Government secured two FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) World League matches to be played next month.
The FIVB World League is a globally recognised competition, which is played in 16 host cities around the world.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the Sydney series between Australia and Brazil will be broadcast to around 150 countries.
“This is further evidence of the NSW Government’s commitment to bringing major sporting events to the State, with these matches expected to attract around 1,500 visitors and make an estimated contribution of $1 million to the NSW visitor economy,” Mr Ayres said.
“This series will showcase some of the world’s best volleyball players, with Brazil ranked number one in the world, and Australia ranked number eight.
“The Volleyroos are rising quickly through the international rankings, and the FIVB World League event in Sydney will be crucial as their campaign to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio builds momentum,” Mr Ayres added.
The matches were secured for Sydney by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
The FIVB World League matches will take place at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on the 27th and 28th June 2015.
