'The Familia Effect'
Photomedia
"My artwork is a literal exploration of the connections between family members and the role that time plays in their interactions between one another. Through photography, I will focus on the individual interactions between each family member to comparatively gain a deeper understanding into how time uncovers the complexities of each family dynamic, respective of the way that each individual is arranged against the previous., I will be employing the idea of the 'droste effect', a Dutch technique of 'a picture recursively appearing within itself, in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appear.' Simultaneously, I am attempting to create a contemporary take on traditional portraiture, by rotating each member in each frame based on the traditional hierarchy of portraiture; father, mother, sibling, second sibling, etc. By using the idea of a frame and image repeating itself and recurring, I am playing on the idea of repetition through life and how interactions and differences between individuals, as seen through the layering of each frame, helps to break the mould of likeness and understand of how time affects dynamics between families."
