My grandma has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). There is no known cause and no cure. My body of work is an exploration of MS and more generally the idea of biological deterioration and decay. Unlike other diseases MS is not caused by a foreign pathogen but is an auto-immune disease where the body’s own immune system attacks itself. This self-attack is represented as loss of identity, with the portraits fading in and out of the foreground and into absence. The title of this work is Scars because Multiple Sclerosis originates from the Greek word skleros, meaning ‘scars’.
