Women of Colour – A Study of Portraiture and Colour Theory
Painting
For my body of work, I decided to embark on an exploration of portraiture. My intent was to include both the loose, sketch-like painting strokes of the first stages of the portrait process in the body and hair of the subject as well as the detailed refinement of the finished face. Inspired by the way Toulouse-Lautrec’s eruption of cool colour on the foreground of his unfinished sketches brings forward the detailed faces of his subjects, I made a study of colour theory, exploring the impact of complementary colours in combination with the influence of Toulouse-Lautrec’s unfinished sketch style.
