The heaviness of air in a state of total equilibrium
In The Heaviness of Air in a State of Total Equilibrium I challenge the frailty of a balloon to explore mortality and permanence. Metal balloons, suspended in tranquillity, create a state of equilibrium within the Perspex tank. My body of work is a homage to Jeff Koons’ 1985 exhibition Equilibrium, juxtaposing, as he did, the material qualities of weight and weightlessness to refer to the cyclical nature of human life. Using 3D-printed balloon models cast in bronze I represent the ephemeral nature of life. The mirror finish of the balloons invites self-reflection; can you see yourself within the work?
