The concept behind Unfixed was to investigate the combination of different materials. I found that a large amount of experimentation was required in order to establish cohesion within my body of work. Compressed charcoal and ink portraits have a harsh quality compared to those using the fluid-like state of resin. Mixing resin and charcoal enabled me to strengthen these materials. By amalgamating ink, charcoal and resin I could represent a larger spectrum of expression in my portraits. These experiments were aided in my choice of expressive form.
