Connecting to Country at the Athletic Centre
The brand-new Hammer Cage at the Athletic Centre is now enriched with artwork by Kyara Fernando.

Following the recent $2.7 million upgrade to the Athletic Centre, the brand-new Hammer Cage is now enriched with artwork by Kyara Fernando, a proud Dunghutti (Dhanggati) woman.
Kyara worked with the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) to design the Aboriginal visual identity to symbolise the government's ongoing commitment to walking alongside and working with Aboriginal communities. The designs on the Hammer Cage reflect stories of culture, connection, strength and belonging making it a powerful meeting of sport, place and culture.
We’re proud to collaborate with DPHI and Kyara on unique projects like this to honour Wangal Country and reaffirm our commitment to meaningful Aboriginal representation by embedding respect, recognition and culture into the places where our community comes together and thrives.
About the Artist
Kyara Fernando Dunghutti (Dhanggati)
Kyara’s work tells the story of the enduring relationships between community, and the lands and waters that have sustained us for generations.
The art depicts a central gathering place, surrounded by other communities showcasing the diversity of shared cultural traditions in NSW.
The concept emphasises the strength of bloodline connections, and the living history and collective identity of the state, while the incorporation of environmental elements, including waterways and landscapes, evokes imagery of ancestral lands, reminding us as a department of the importance of balancing program delivery with a connection to nature and Country.
It is through connection and recognition of these landscapes that we can continue to honour and support the survival of cultural practices, places and peoples for many generations to come.
