The ARTEXPRESS exhibition Contemporary exchanges at Sydney Olympic Park is now available as both a virtual gallery and tour, bringing the largest collection of student artworks from the 2019 HSC Visual Art examinations into homes.
This is the first year the exhibition has been offered virtually providing access to view each of the artworks and student statements from the 58 HSC Visual Art students who were hand-picked by curator Danielle Gulllota to explore strong themes spanning social, personal, political and global issues.
The physical exhibition at the Sydney Olympic Park Armory Gallery is closed and large numbers of school excursions have been cancelled as part of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Sydney Olympic Park Authority Manager Events and Activation, Tony Nesbitt said the exhibition was a ringing endorsement of the quality of arts education in NSW and was pleased to facilitate access to this key arts and educational program through the use of technology.
“The exhibition is offered free to the community and usually attracts large numbers of school excursions,” said Mr Nesbitt.
“In light of the current situation, I am pleased that we can continue to provide access to the arts and this showcase exhibition through a virtual gallery and a video tour, making it feel like you are there walking in the gallery. Even in the most difficult of times, art endures.
“There is extraordinary talent, insight and conceptual sophistication on display and I encourage everyone, particularly students who were planning to attend the exhibition as an excursion, to visit the website and engage with the art online.”
The exhibition features paintings, drawings, sculptures, textiles, printmaking, ceramics, photography and new media art.
In 2019, 8,600 students took part in the HSC Visual Art examinations, of which more than 500 achieved the highest grade. The work of almost half of these students appears in a series of ARTEXPRESS exhibitions across NSW, including the Sydney Olympic Park Armory Gallery, Art Gallery of NSW, Hazelhurst Arts Centre and Goulburn Regional Art Gallery.
The ARTEXPRESS exhibition at Sydney Olympic Park is available virtually as a part of Sydney Olympic Park LIVE, an array of enriching virtual experiences to connect people to Sydney Olympic Park facilitating fun and discovery.
